Mommy Tip

My small list on Mommy tips:

* Kids are kids. Their character traits will always be a work in progress. Just as adults struggle, I can't expect the kids to "work" until they are finally "perfected."

* Parents are the kids' yatzer hatov /good inclination. Everyone has a bad inclination - the urge to do the deliciously wrong things! The sages say that small children simply have no yatzer hatov -good inclination (that, or its very weak or on and off). We, the parents, are their yazer hatov -the good inclination, the urge to do what is right. How do we want that yatzer hatov to sound like? How do we want that "good angel" that is meant to council them towards good to sound like? Certainly not like an angry BW! LOL!

Blowing the Shofar

(H/t: Shirat Devorah)

One thing about Tsfat, I don't hear the shofars every morning like I used to in Jerusalem...

I'm buying a shofar and making my own calling.

Sweet kids story:

The kids are starting to write and they enjoy writing me little letters. Missy Blackfirewhitefire wrote a really cute one saying, "you are a nays (nice) mama". I told her I'd read it at night when nobody is around and get joy from it.

She quipped, "What if I show you this letter whenever you are upset with me? Will you get happy?"

I laughed and told her yes. Its like when the Jewish people were at Mount Sinai, they were willing to receive the Torah. They said, "we will do, and (then) we will hear!" this was to show how much they believed. They'd do whatever they had to do and understand it later. THen they blew the shofar. Nowadays, whenever we get to the day of judgement, Rosh HaShana, we blow the shofar. Sort of like reminding God of that cute "letter" that we wrote Him during they day when He could possibly be upset with us!

(This lesson was from the Lubavitcher Rebbe).

Caster Semenya's case: Chutzpah Min HaChutzpah (The Height of Chutzpah)

Caster Semenya, in my opinion, should never have subjected herself to those gender tests. She was qualified enough to join into the game, but not qualified to win?

My two cents is that she should have stood her ground and not allowed them to test her. This would have been BW putting their best "Netzach" right foot forward. Sure she may have lost her medal. But no one can take her record away. At very worSt, she would end up becoming a mere footnote in "White world history books" loaded with controversial and humiliating questions. (and if the confidence was were it should be, she'd be a hero in "Black world history books"). At best, she would be able to keep her medal after a fight in court -which I think she could win- AND not have submitted to the humiliating gender probing. That would have been an even great victory because it would set a precedence to BW.

After Weeks of Riot...

After weeks of riot in the Ultra Orthodox world in a certain neighborhood in J'lem, we find out that the lady -whom everyone was protesting that the hospital killed her child (while the hospital says the child died of starvation)-- is suspected of starving even her other children.

Talk about protesting for the possibly wrong person!

Fatima Rifka Bary

I know that most are not so interested in MiddleEastern news or even this particular story (though its not middle eastern). But for some reason it captures my attention.

My question is why is her face being splashed all over the news?

Rosh Hodesh Elul!

Its the new moon and the new month of Elul in the Hebrew calendar! Happy birthday to me!! Its also the birthdays of my daughters! Yay!

What I really like about this month is that everyday the shofar is blown. I don't know why I like that exactly but it makes me excited lol! Also some begin the "slihot"- a liturgy of apologies and repentance in order to come clean and ready for Rosh Hashana -the new year (and the day of judgement.

Health Care Video

This is so loaded I don't even know where to begin.

(hat tip= Dov Bear)

The woman says "heil hitler!" (may that name be erased). No sensitivity. And on top of that she make crying baby noise to show how much she doesn't care about what the Israeli man is saying. Now the clincher for me:

She's wearing the Israel military shirt. If that doesn't speak of the rift between the Israeli people and the (Mixed Multitude) government...

I have heard this rhetoric before. But I do admit I get really annoyed at the gov. Enough said on that. (yep, I'm also sort of scared of them.)

Who Controls Gaza Now?

Hamas? Fatah? Now Al Qaeda is in the picture!

Somehow, I'm sure Israel will get blamed for this one.

Not to mention an upsurge in violence in Israel. Our contractor went missing for a few days. After much searching, we found him. He was in jail. Apparently, Arabs tried to break into his storage place (machsan) and he fought them off. So he gets this. Granted I don't know the whole story.

Another Only-in-Israel Moment

The Blackfirewhitefire family was out grocery shopping. There are lots of tourists here in Tsfat and there was a small bunch posing for a camera. A police car that was just passing by turn on his loud speaker and says to the bunch, "Smile, smile! say Cheese!!!"

Socialist Healthcare At Work

I don't know what Obama has in store for y'all. All I can say is that here in Israel, we have Socialism. The way health care works here: When I need regular, routine things done, I go to the local, usual doctors.

When I actually have a problem or suspect something serious, I pay and go to a private doctor!

The last major thing was when I was expecting. One of the kids broke out with the chicken pox and I was not sure if I had it already as a child. I called my mom and she (God bless her) proudly says I didn't have it. Oh man, that was not the news I wanted to hear, but I didn't say anything. I thanked her and reported this to the doctor.

He advises that I have a test and a shot but these things can't be done until some weeks later. By then the baby would have been already born with whatever potential damage that would happen. I asked the doctor can't they speed up the check to see if I had the chicken pox or not? Then I can have the shot administered and whatever problem would be avoided.

Well, even though all my papers were marked urgent, everything went REALLY S L O W.

Finally, I just relaxed and just hoped I really must have gotten the chicken pox when young. Thank God everything turned out okay. But just letting you know what a gov. operated health care system can look like.

No More Insulin Shots

Hah! Let's see if anybody picks up this (good news for diabetics) story.

BTW, its the Klezmer festival here in Tsfat. So every night they light up the sky with firecrackers. One of my favorite singers is singing tonight, but I don't have the energy to drag myself out to hear him. Here's a not so good sound of a good song by him.

(he's singing, "if you think good, it will be good!"

Black Jew the New Black?

The Love Portion

Slowly slowly I am seeing more Black Jews around. I mean more Black ultra Orthodox Jews! A part of me wants to tell them to run so that they won't face any potential social problems. But I bite my tongue.

There is what to gain.

As far as I've seen. Its only in these circles that the Torah gets explored in such depths, such far reaching depths I feel like I literally get high from it. I pray that these Black Jews at least realize the bottomless depth that Torah can go before they leave that circle. Then hopefully, they will take that knowledge with them and it will become a part of them. There is way too much to learn.

So for now, because of the restriction between men and women to interact, when I see a BM religious Jew walking down the street, out of respect for him and his need to guard the brit (circumcision; i.e. not to look at women and have base after thoughts, etc), I say nothing. To the little black boys, I give them a nod. To the women and girls, if I see that they are open, I smile and talk with them.

II Samuel Chapter 6

11 And the ark of the LORD remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months; and the LORD blessed Obed-edom, and all his house.

12 And it was told king David, saying: 'The LORD hath blessed the house of Obed-edom, and all that pertaineth unto him, because of the ark of God.' And David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-edom into the city of David with joy.

13 And it was so, that when they that bore the ark of the LORD had gone six paces, he sacrificed an ox and a fatling.
Wow, every 6 pace!!

14 And David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod. Woohoo!!!! Serve God with all your might!

15 So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting, and with the sound of the horn.

16 And it was so, as the ark of the LORD came into the city of David, that Michal the daughter of Saul looked out at the window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the LORD; and she despised him in her heart.

17 And they brought in the ark of the LORD, and set it in its place, in the midst of the tent that David had pitched for it; and David offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings before the LORD.

18 And when David had made an end of offering the burnt-offering and the peace-offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD of hosts.

20 Then David returned to bless his household. {S} And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said: 'How did the king of Israel get him honour to-day, who uncovered himself to-day in the eyes of the handmaids of his servants, as one of the vain fellows shamelessly uncovereth himself!'
Ah, perhaps you should get your blessings first before disparaging??? Or better yet, keep the mouth shut.

21 And David said unto Michal: 'Before the LORD, who chose me above thy father, and above all his house, to appoint me prince over the people of the LORD, over Israel, before the LORD will I make merry.

22 And I will be yet more vile than thus, and will be base in mine own sight; and with the handmaids whom thou hast spoken of, with them will I get me honour.'

23 And Michal the daughter of Saul had no child unto the day of her death. {P}

In the Jewish Bible, the {P} usually means "we are SO done with this topic!" lol.

Kicking into Redemption Mode 5

There are many ways to grow and learn. The most chilling and popular way is through pain! Having our blinders yanked from our eyes hurt. Realizing a friend was not a friend hurts. Knowing you made a mistake due to lack of will power hurts, etc.

So Israel Ber Odesser who was supposed to fast with the rest of Israel, was crestfallen because he had succumbed to his hunger and ate.

After days of secretly crying, pleading for forgiveness and basically kicking himself and being depressed,he had a strong urge to open up one of his Breslov books.

He opened the book and found a note. It was addressed to him as a dear "student" and in the note, it expressed knowledge that Israel Ber had broken the fast on that fast day (17th of Tammuz).

Israel was shocked. How could anyone have known? Who wrote this note? The only conclusion he could conclude was that it was from his teacher. But his "teacher" was Rebbe Nachman--- who had died so long ago!!!

It was unbelievable. Nobody wanted to believe it. But based on what was written on the note, it was hard to not come to this conclusion.

Within that note is the now famous: Na Nach Nachma Machman M'Uman!

Israel Saba urged everyone to spread far and wide the books of Rebbe Nachman. He also said, "I am Na Nach Nachma Nachman M'Uman".

From that time on something new was brought into this world. Some say this is the new song and that phrase "Na Nach Nachma Nachman M'Uman" has been put into all sorts of melodies and danced and sung by the followers of Israel Ber Odesser -aka Israel Saba.

I decided to focus on this event and try and pray and learn and see if I could understand it a bit. I am happy to say that slowly slowly God has allowed me to understand this a little bit. This is what I understand so far:

I like the positive message that the followers of Israel Odesser send out. Its like they took back Breslov -or the teachings of Rebbe Nachman and returned it back to the individual again.

From the phrase, "I am Na Nach Nachma M'Uman" there is evidence that Israel Saba was the reincarnate of Rebbe Nachman.

The Tikkunei Zohar speaks of a song that will be sung in the end of days. There is also a teaching that it will be in a single, double, triple, and quadruple formation.

The Na Nach (minus the "Uman" part)is in that formation.

It is also taught that the name of God is encased in righteous people (tzaddikim). For example, if Joe Smith was a righteous man, kind, giving, etc. His name would be considered an encasement or a garment for a part of God's name. Basically his name is connected to God's name.

Thus, Rebbe Nachman is considered a righteous person and so his name is broken down into that formation.

Now, Rebbe Nachman was kind and very giving of much teachings. He was a popular person and a teacher. But all he wanted -what most righteous people really want- was to walk humbly with his God and live a simple life. It seems that that was granted to him through Israel ber Odesser. Odesser was the simple man. He produced no works of his own, struggled to know what he knew, was not famous until the end of his life.

According to one of his students, Rebbe Nachman -who was giving of his teachings, his time, his life, was connected to the "provider" name of God (Ado...). The possibly returning soul (nefesh) who is Israel Saba, was not so giving. He produced no works of his own, and was quite restraining of himself to speak only of the teachings of his teacher, Rebbe Nachman. (Reminds me of how Isaac was to Avraham). Thus, Israel Saba was more hidden. More connected to the hidden name of God (Yud Kay...). This would explain why he, rather than Rebbe Nachman, made the statement:

"I am Na Nach Nachma Nachman m'Uman."

Well. All this has led me full circle back to enjoying Rebbe Nachman's teachings.

Gay -Center Shoot out in Tel Aviv

Perhaps I don't pay enough attention to the news, but this seemed like a rare event.

What happened to the value of HUMAN LIVES??

I hate to say this but aside from the terrorists, Israel is pretty great place - I don't want that to change. Haters must be stopped.

Its quite strange that this incident should happen. With all the talk of rebuilding the temple that's flying around, the whole reason the temple was destroyed -the inner reason, I mean- was because each fellow had baseless hatred towards the other one. (They did not share what they'd learned, each tried to out do the other, they did not rebuke the other when they saw them doing wrong, etc). And now this...

Re: Gays. I don't really have an opinion on what I think about gay or lesbian things. Do I need an opinion for everything?

Not pride, but confidence!!!!!

Please, if nothing else, get this.

Positive Actions

A group in Raleigh, North Carolina has begun using billboards to tell the world that BW and children are missing and need to be reported. This is a great step in helping BW and children physically as well as psychologically --telling them that they matter!

You can help too by contacting the Edgecombe County, North Carolina group by taking a check payable to “MOMS” to any Wachovia bank branch. The local branch number is 252-937-2854. I’m sure they will also accept a wire transfer or other transactions as well.

This info (including the picture) is from WAOD's recent post.

And you can get more info at theEssential Presence blog.
