Parashat: Shemot

We are moving along and have now begun reading the book of Shemot -which is known as the book of Exodus.

Interesting that it is called "shemot" which means "names"

Anyway, I saw a very interesting drush/teaching that Rabbi (?) Natan Slifkin put on his blog, he himself heard it from someone else.. I'll repost:

“And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out to his brothers, and looked on their burdens; and he spied an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his brothers. And he looked this way and that way, and he saw that there was no man; and he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand". (Exodus 2:11-12)

Many years ago, I heard a terrific drush on this from Rabbi Dr. Natan Lopez-Cardozo, quoting Rav Shlomo Kluger: that we are being told here about the identity crisis of the prince of Egypt. When Moshe saw the Egyptian beating the Jew, “He looked this way and that way” – he looked at his royal Egyptian upbringing, and at his Jewish ancestral roots. “And he saw that there was no man” – he saw that he lacked a true identity. “And he slew the Egyptian” – within himself. “And hid him in the sand” – he totally detached himself from the Egyptian mindset, and aligned himself fully with the fate of the Jews.

Confessions About a Palm Tree

I'm a bit embarrassed to confess this.  But I have a beloved palm tree.  Since I spend most of my time in the kids room. I usually help them get to sleep, say the night time prayer with them. And then stare out of their window, which has a palm tree right in front of it.  This palm tree and I have had many nights together reading psalms, talking to G-d (hitbodedut), thinking, wondering things out loud, etc.

Only this weekend I realized that I've grown fond of this palm tree.  Like a solid friend always there with its dancing leaves.  Sometimes it plays tricks on me when it rustles its leaves (the sound of rustling palm tree leaves sounds like rain). Most times it just stands there, like a witness to all my heart pourings to The One Above.

I really like that palm tree.

Black Jews no longer in the background of US life

By way of a joke, Robin Washington, Minnesota newspaper editor, African American and observant Jew, explained how mainstream Christian society marginalizes Judaism in American life, filters its holidays through the lens of Christian tradition:
One kid: What ya getting for Christmas?
Another kid: I'm Jewish.
First kid: Oh. What ya getting for Jewish Christmas, then?
Washington's joke cuts to the heart of the relative isolation that Hanukkah endures on the national holiday calendar, and by extension the experience of black Jews, a minority inside a minority. As American Jews in general establish their identity in the face of the nation's predominately Christian identity, Jewish African-Americans -- who sometimes self-identify as "JOC's" (for Jews of color) -- face another challenge in the United States.
The idea of black Jews in America is more widely accepted than in years past, dovetailing with the nation's overall increasingly diverse demographic mosaic. But challenges exist in the integration of the black Judaic experience into a skeptical or disbelieving public, and into some aspects of Jewish tradition itself.
For Washington, editor in chief of the Duluth News Tribune, co-founder of the National Alliance of Black Jews, and an oft-quoted writer and essayist on the black Jewish experience, the sense of being "different" is one he felt most acutely through his children.
"Hanukkah isn't a major Jewish holiday, and only takes on that significance in the U.S. because of Christmas. By no means is it insignificant, but it's not Christmas," he told theGrio recently. "The problem, of course, is for families, and keeping your children from crying when their friends are visiting Santa and getting presents." Read more at the Grio.

Turkish man goes on trial for plot to kill rabbis - Israel News, Ynetnews

I am glad the plot was foiled.

Not to make light of this. But it reminds me of a joke:

There was once a Jewish man who always took a certain train to work. There was the usual crowd on that early morning train and although no one spoke to one another, everyone was quite comfortable with each other. The Jewish man would come with his Jewish news paper, sit in his usual spot and the train would go.

Well, one day something was different. The Jewish man came in with an Arabic paper. He took his usual spot and proceeded to read as the train began to move. Over come by curiousity some of the passengers asked him, "why are you reading an Arabic newspaper? what happened to your usual papers?"

"Well," the man began, "I just got tired of all the bad news. Anti-semitism over here, plots to kill rabbis over there, world condemning Israel left and right. I just wanted some good news. In the Arabic papers we own all the banks! We run the economy! We are great lobbyist! We're on top of the world!!!"

Netanyahu Decides to Ask Obama to Free Pollard - Inside Israel - Israel News - Israel National News

Netanyahu Decides to Ask Obama to Free Pollard - Inside Israel - Israel News - Israel National News

This reminds me of a scene from "The Wizard of Oz" where the scarecrow approaches the wizard and the wizard screams out, "COME FORWARD" as so he comes, all wobbly legs and all to make his request.

Then the wizard asks them to do all sorts of suicidal stunts in order to get their wishes granted (like killing a wicked witch). Well, in the end, all was granted.

Then again, it also reminds me of another story....with Purim being around the corner...Esther having to ask the king a question...

In this story queen Esther had to come before the king --the story leaves things vague sometimes when they talk about the king--is it the human king Xerxes? or the King of Kings Himself? Anyway, she fasts and her people fasts for three whole days before she makes her daring move....

in the end, her wishes were granted!

Its very difficult.

While I'm sad that she died. Even sadder that it was such a brutal multiple stabbing sort of death...Its unnerving to read about misisonaries who say they "love the Jewish people". Pulease. If they truly "loved" us they would leave us alone and not prosyletize and try to convert us. Do we try to convert others? Why can't they too be content? Do they need others to convert in order to validate their own beliefs?

Quotable Quotes

From Kings I, 18
...Ahab sent for all the children of Israel and got the prophets together at Mount Carmel
...Then the fire of HaShem came down burning up the offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and drinking up the water in the drain.
...And when the people saw it they all went down on their faces and said HaShem is the Elokim.
...And after a very little time, the heaven became black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain.

(hat tip - Dreaming of Moshiach blog)

and sure enough, after the fires at Carmel, that night or the next day, there was rain.

BW in America (and the world over) and the Shechina

By BW I mean women with Black African ancestry that shows. By the Shechina, I mean the Jewish definition: the divine presence of the Holy One, Blessed be He,in the world.

Most times, in Jewish teachings and sources, the Holy One is hardly ever -well never- seen as a little lamb, unable to defend himself and willingly allowing Himself afflictions. However, there is a part of Him, the Shechina -which is His pDivine Presence in the world that at seems to have a "weak side". When people blaspheme or do hurtful things, it is said that the Shechina goes away from that place. Almost as if its running away. The perpetrator is then left to the designs of nature, harsh judgements of the world.

That also reminds me of King David.  King David was quite powerful and strong.  When he was a young lad, he protected his sheep against bears and lions, etc.  And he fought Goliath, the giant and single handledly beat him. However, when he was on the defense, when Shaul was coming after him, all he could do was run away.

It seems like when he's on the offense, it works better for him. But when he's on the defense....oy vavoy to him.

Sometimes I wonder if Black Women are like that too??? Potentially better at the offensive and not so good with the defensive?

.just musing.

Shabbat Shalom to all / have a great weekend!!!

World's Currency Reserve

What is that?

The World's currency reserve is like back up money that various countries store.  At the moment the world's currency reserve is dollars (yay for Americans!!!).

The world currency reserve is also used to purchase things like oil and gold. That means, when someone, or some company, or some country from anywhere in the world wants to buy oil or gold, they first have to convert their currency into dollars and then buy the items they want (not to mention paying a transaction cost).

Not bad. Each time the conversion occurs, America gets something. And when America wants to buy these items, they don't have to convert anything since its already in dollars. So the price is much lower for them.

You can read more about that at wikipedia.

In 2008 Some companies began to accept Euros rather than just dollars.

OPEC, a group of Arab countries that came together to regulate the price of their oil, are considering changing the currency reserve away from the dollars.

Now sure what's going on here...

I would love to fundraise and get books (chumash, tannakh, etc) for the Igbos of Nigeria. I seem to have good mazal fundraising, but I am not confidence about the business part of it all (establishing a bank account, etc).

A short story:

Long ago, I once asked a kabbalist what can I do for Africa. I feel so much for it, but feel powerless to do much. He said to just think positively about it.  I thanked him and hung up the phone.  Secretly I thought, "just think about Africa? How's that going to do anything?!"

Anyway, that year, I did think alot about Africa, not just the continent, but individual countries, people I knew, African Americans, Caribbeans...all the African descended peoples and wished them well and worried about them, pined that they should be well, etc.  That same year, my sister came into the Jewish fold!!

I was very happy! I don't know how it happened. I don't even know if these two incidents are related. But It was a good feeling.

The Race to Authentic Judaism

Another post I would rather read about than write about, but until someone writes about it...

The Jewish people have so many different parts. Each part believing their way is right.  And then throw in there those who aren't even Jewish but feel they have an input into all of this. Now what is happening is whenever someone wants to convert to Judaism, all sorts of groups can swarm this person and lead them......I don't know where.

much prayer is needed. Action too. I just don't know what action besides blogging about these issues.

Currently, there is a group of Igbos who want to convert and be Jewish. But the Orthodox Jewry is not doing anything about it.  Now the Jews for J are coming over there to tell them what's what.

Down Doo-be Doo-be Doo-Ah.....

I'm actually quite down today.

Sweet Mickey is running for the presidency of Haiti. Need I say more?

Aside from the fact that I have to revise a book I am writing. (I have to force myself not to succomb to laziness. I've got to revise and revise until its really good.)

I have a leaking roof - it can easily be fixed, if attended to soon.

I went to a wonderful shiur /?class where everyone was very engaged and the topic was delicious. But it left me thinking: what can we do to help the world? To heal the world? It all seems so unsurmountable.

At any rate, I don't want to get too down in the dumps. We had much needed rain, praise God for that!

The book is getting along pretty nicely.

The kids are getting more able to manage themselves. Now I feel like the wired monkey mother with the bottle of milk. (from the experiment where they took baby monkeys and gave them a choice the cuddlly soft mother doll or the metalic hard wirey mother doll with a bottle of milk in her hand. The monkeys chose the cuddly mother but only went to the wirey metalic one when they needed milk).

So what's really making me down. I guess all the factions in the Jewish world. Where's the unity, man?!

Well that was a drabby post. lol.

I hope they enjoyed the safety they had, and I pray it brings back a more positive image of Israel to their friends and families. I rather like this chain of events. I hope Israel gets a stronger relationship with African countries (or at least the free countrymen in the various African countries). The two hated groups coming together. Hated or envied? This is totally my opinion but I feel like those two coming together is like chochma bina daat (wisdom, understanding, knowledge) combining with netzach hod yesod (dominance, splendor, foundation). Like Moses meets Joseph. lol.

A Post About the Black Man

I would really like to write a post about Black men. But again all the letters are crowding in my mind wanting to be the first ones out and I can't calm them down.

They sure went through alot in America -slavery, jim crow, discrimination, imprisonment, discouragement, despair, etc. And the world over, its been a ride. Some bloggers are even predicting their grand exit from the stage of life!

But I think God has other plans.

Sometimes I wonder if they are like the cornerstone rock that the builder rejected?  For a while the media was going strong against the tea partiers accusing them of being racists, etc.  I am not saying that they are or that they aren't, but I thought it was interesting that they had to search for black male compatriots to prove otherwise.

I feel like America dug itself into a hole by initiating and enjoying the pleasures of injustice inflicted upon Black folks. Much of it is being remedied to some degree -- no more jim crow, the racial profile is seen as racist, etc. However, now there are real problems that could have been resolved with profiling -not necessarily racial- but because this method was used in a hateful, unjust way its very hard to invoke this method without incurring the wrath of the "this is finally my chance to do right" people. For example, they will fight tooth and nail to make sure Muslims are not targeted to be searched exclusively for weapons and bombs at airports, even though most  terrorists have been Muslims. I am not saying this type of profiling should be done, I am just noting the mess America has gotten itself into.

Also, after so much discrimination and searching for identity and acceptance, many black men have turned to Islam. Now that many Muslims are rising to the level of Jihad in Islam -which is a very lofty level in Islam, I am sure America wishes it had those Black men as allies. But the truth is, each one is a potential cell that can be activated against America.

Even in Jewish life, with big celebrities such as Amar'e Stoudemire and Shyne publicly coming to Judaism or exploring their Jewish roots, it sends many into a scramble of how to view Black men particularly Black Jewish men within their midst.

Something is going on in the world....Do Blacks, particularly American Blacks understand how they are effecting the world? Individuals?

At any rate, this needs to be figured out.  There are many Black young boys in need of guidance to know that they matter in the world. That they have a beautiful purpose, misson and reason for being here. That there is an alternative to succumbing to low expectations, lust, or anger.

Stories from the Talmud

If you recall we did the story of Alexander the Great who went to an African village run by women to conquer it. He only ended up having his rear end handed back to him! (lol! okay, not so dramatic as that). You can read that story Here.

This is also about Alexander the Great from the Babylonian Talmud (Mas. Tamid 32b), he hadn't left Africa yet. Story embellished by moi!!!

Afterwards Alexander the Great continued on his way, but before he left the continent, he stayed and rested near a river. Suddenly he got a great whiff --a fragrant and wonderful smell-Gan Eden!!! The Garden of Eden!!!

"Whoa!!" he exclaimed, "what is this?"

"you have reached the gates of Gan Eden." Said the gate keeper. "But you may not enter."

"Let me in!! I want to see! or at least give me something from there."

The gatekeeper gave the greek fighter an eye ball.  Alexander took it, but it was heavy. He weighed it on the scale and it was heavier than the gold he got from the villages of women. Then at the gatekeepers suggestion, he put a rag on top of the eyeball and covered it,  and suddenly the gold tipped the scale.  The gold was now heavier!!

"What is this?!" he demanded.

The gatekeeper explained, "when you look and desire, you will never be satiated.  Even gold is not enough. But when you shut your roaming eyes and stop desiring more and more, then you will have gold!)

Payback time for Anti-Wikileakers?

LONDON – Hackers rushed to the defense of WikiLeaks on Wednesday, launching attacks on MasterCard, Visa, Swedish prosecutors, a Swiss bank and others who have acted against the site and its jailed founder Julian Assange.

Internet "hacktivists" operating under the label "Operation Payback" claimed responsibility in a Twitter message for causing severe technological problems at the website for MasterCard, which pulled the plug on its relationship with WikiLeaks a day ago.

MasterCard acknowledged "a service disruption" involving its Secure Code system for verifying online payments, but spokesman James Issokson said consumers could still use their credit cards for secure transactions. Later Wednesday, Visa's website was inaccessible.

The online attacks are part of a wave of support for WikiLeaks that is sweeping the Internet. Twitter was choked with messages of solidarity for the group, while the site's Facebook page hit 1 million fans.

Nothing to do/Ain Ma L'A'asot

Thick Fluid vs Lucid Fluid

I just went to a wonderful meeting with a bunch of women. I had a wonderful time. There was something that was nagging at me though and it took me a while and much discussing with my sister before I could realize what it was.

I felt like thick fluid amongst lucid fluid.  Not sure how to explain that.  Like I was thick and heavy and they were light and flowing.  I need to delve into this more. But one thing I do notice about very talkative people is that they talk much much more than I feel comfortable to do. I wanted to join in, but I felt more comfortable listening.  I did say my two -shekels worth. But I also noticed the difference.  Nothing wrong with that.

My new question is how do I make this work? How to mix gold ("silence is gold") with silver ("speech is silver")?

"Speech is silver, silence is gold"
an American proverb

How do I mix my thick fluid with their lucid fluid.  I don't want to loose myself, but should I become mroe lucid (which would cause them, by default to get thicker/quieter)?

Interesting dilemma....

Jewish Jokes

Two men walked into a restaurant, the first one asks for tea. The second also asks for tea. "And make sure the glass is clean," he tells the waiter.
When the waiter returns with the two glasses of tea he asks, "Which one of asked for the clean glass?"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~```
A man walking along a California beach was deep in prayer. All of a sudden he said out loud, "Lord grant me one wish." Suddenly the sky clouded above his head and in a booming voice the Lord said, "Because you have been faithful to me in all ways, I will grant you one wish"
The man said, "Build a bridge to Hawaii, so I can drive over anytime I want to."
The Lord said, "Your request is very materialistic. Think of the logistics of that kind of undertaking. The supports required to reach the bottom of the Pacific! The concrete and steel it would take! I can do it, but it is hard for me to justify your desire for worldly things. Take a little more time and think of another wish, a wish you think would honor and glorify me."
The man thought about it for a long time. Finally he said, "Lord, I have been married and divorced four times. All of my wives said that I am uncaring and insensitive. I wish that I could understand women. I want to know how they feel inside, what they are thinking when they give me the silent treatment, why they cry, what they mean when they say "nothing" and how I can make a woman truly happy".
After a few minutes God said, "You want two lanes or four on that bridge?"
The Musical Chair
I'm having a flashback. In third grade. I had just begun learning English and could actually follow along in class. It was a nice enough school. There weren't many Blacks in my class, but being a tom-boy I didn't really care. I had my guy friends and we were cool.
One day, the teacher asked us to play musical chairs. The children's game in which the teacher makes some sort of music or noise while all the kids walk around the room. When the teacher stops the noise, everyone had to find a seat quickly. But the trick is that there is always one seat less than the amount of children. So slowly slowly kids get illiminated from the game until there is only one --the winner.
Well, so the game got down to only two students: me and another girl.  As we walked around the room while the teacher played her music, in my youth and innocence I could still feel the whole room rooting for the other girl.  Some were cheering her loudly.  I was the foreign black student unkown to most.   My timid smile came on. It was my defense. My "I have so much to say, so much that I feel, but I can't put it all in words" smile.  The music went on. There was only one seat. And I wanted it...
I became oblivious to the cheer for the other girl.  I was in a silent place inside myself.  Eventually, the music would have to end and one of us would get the seat.  Despite the pressure I felt from the class to "lose" there was a part of me that, well, just didn't wanna. So when the music stopped, I ran as fast as I could and got the seat!
I won!!!
The class was silent.
I won.
Shrugging Off Invisibility
With all the Black Women empowerment blogs out there disecting all the parts that need dissecting in order for BW to have, to gain, to succeed; one wrong that was discussed that needs correcting is the invisibility we/some of us have.  That is a  scary thing to tackle if you don't have confidence. Invisibility can be a comfort for those who want to stop at mediocrity.
For those who want to push forward and be all that they can be in this life  time, who want to excel in many ways, I would like to encourage you to take an objective view of this invisibility and then act accordingly.
There is a teaching that if you seek wisdom, you face the southern winds, if you want wealth, its the northern winds, spirituality -eastward, and westward (conflicting views on that one).
However, if you want it all--- be invisible!
This is not the same invisibility that the bloggers were talking about.  If I understood correctly, what they are talking about is ineffectiveness, non-leadership, not given the time of day nor the security that other groups of people have, etc.
The invisibility I mean is humility.  Confidence.   Knowing you abilities, your strong points and your weak points and navigating with that in mind to achieve a goal. Of course, if the goal is simply wealth, then by all means charge northwards.  If the goal is simply wisdom, go south, etc.
And what does it mean to go "north" for wealth? "South" for wisdom? Remember, this is all in the spiritual realm. Any way, wealth and anger are basically two sides of the same coin. Thus sighing, praying for, pursuing wealth can easily bring anger! The trick is catching the blessing, the "coin" on the right side up (like heads or tails game?)  When anger is prompting you it usually means an answered prayer for wealth is coming your way, don't take the anger! Don't succumb to anger!! Instead, keep your cool and think of the potential wealth that could be had.
"From the north comes forth gold" (Job 37:22)
And as for wisdom, it is represented by the south. When the Holy Temple built by Solomon stood, the menora was placed in the south --a thing of lights (like the Chanukah menora). Lights is wisdom --abundantly shining upon an individual.  To acquire much light/wisdom one needs the proper "oil" for their candles as explained in a previous post.  (See: lighting your seven candles)
I guess what I'm trying to say is: before you throw something out, look it over. round and round. This side and that side. When you are sure there is no use for it, trash it.  If there is any benefit -that the side effects are not harmful- use it. Then before yo throw something out, look it over....
The "invisibility" that bloggers spoke of should be discarded (once a person is ready), but there is another aspect to invisibility that can be used.
I'll let a "maggid" (story teller explain it better):
"As a scholar you must know what it says in the Talmud (Berachot): "Whoever wishes to be wise should face south (in prayer); whoever wishes to be wealthy should face north.1 For the Menorah was positioned in the south and the Showbread Table stood in the north. If a person makes himself as if he is nothing, then he becomes a spiritual entity….
"So let me ask you: What if someone wishes to be both wise and wealthy? There is a vast distance between north and south!"
The man didn't know what to answer. He waited silently.
The Maggid continued, "If a person makes himself as if he is nothing, then he becomes a spiritual entity. As that which is spiritual requires no space and is not restricted by space, he can then be both here and there."
No comment.
Temporary post: Tear and Tears and Tears
I have so much tears waiting to pour out of me. But they all just sit there. Inside. Waiting til the cup is too full that I scream.
I want good for Black women (and Black men. hah! I feel safe to say this now). But I don't know what to do. We have so many incidences of racism, and yet we react the same way. When will that change? Is it doing us any good. We complain. Cuss. Get glum. Then, we move on. No progress. No change. Its safe for both the perpetrator and the victim. The perpetrator gets no repremand, no upheaval in their lives and the victim gets to be safely a victim without having to exert effort into changing things.
But this is not normal. We should not take racism this way. There are ways we can fight this. And when I say fight it doesn't mean pick up a stick and slam it down hard on a person. There are ways and there are ways.
Recently there was the incident of an Ethiopian boy who tried to go to a bathhouse. The boy was only 13, bar mitzvah.  The attendant there refused him entry, and when the boy ignored him, the attendant went after the boy physically hitting him in the face.  The attendant then proceeded to chase the boy home and assualted his brother and aunt. What a mad man!
Personally, I think we need to mobilize and get Ethiopian, African, African Americans going to that bathhouse (mikvah) more frequently so they will get used to it.
I get so saddened by all the "F*** you, Israel!" and "we don't really have an Israel" comments by Black Jews. Well, part of me understands that they are taking out frustrations. But to associate that incident with Israel and Judaism and then to think Israel is not theirs, Judaism is not theirs --that is a problem on two accounts. (1) first problem is Israel is for the Jews (sorry haters, take your story elsewhere please). It doesn't matter if they are white or black. And if a white Jew makes trouble for a Black Jew, that Black Jew must not mentally take it as if that country is not theirs ---that's giving it to them, and relinquishing their rights. Instead the brain pattern I suggest is "what to do with this nudnick?!" and (2) even Judaism should not be "given" exclusively to white Jews only. That person, or group, or society is the problem, not the land, the country, the medina, nor Judaism.
Things can get so bad, many Blacks search for social acceptance -which is a natural need- and they will run to where ever, even in the arms of Islam.  Islam is fine for Arabs. I personally don't understand how a Black person can willingly submit themselves to a religion that still sees Blacks as slaves. That only have one word for a black person which is "Abd" which means "slave". Where to this day slaves are still being taken and is permissable.  Who's wordings in their holy writings disparages them, calling them "raisin head" and saying that if they take on this religion, then their heart is more gross than that of a donkey.  So many Black people were taken as slaves by Muslims so long ago, just as in America, but you hardly find many dark faces in Arab lands.  What happened to all of them? Still, what can I say.  I find it interesting, but  perhaps there is some benefit for them there that I don't know about.
But for those who embrace Judaism, since its not totalitarian coming down  from one person, please don't conflagrate the religion and the people. Whether there are Jews or not, Judaism stays Judaism.  And there are beautiful writings to be explored-- positive things about Blacks. But when will we get to that point? When will we delve into these?  And might there be beautiful writings in Islam about Blacks but, again, Blacks are not searching and delving and exploring???
Sometimes I feel very alone. With nobody to discuss the things I see or read about. Nobody to impart it to. Will it all just disappear when I shut up....until the next lone Black Jewess or Jew discovers these gems and try to spread them only to be ignored because there is a pattern that must be followed and any deviation from that is a disturbance?
And now the Amish visited the kotel and pledged to be a friend to Israel.  I don't know what they can do, but they are prayerful people --something which brings zero honor in the present world, but rocks the heavens (which effects changes right back in this present world).
I too have friends. Praise God.
Just alot of doings and no refueling. Not good. My shedule is wrecked.
Anyway, I'll figure stuff out....
Psalms 23
1 A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He leadeth me beside the still waters.
He restoreth my soul; He guideth me in straight paths for His name's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me; {N}
Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me.
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; {N}
Thou hast anointed my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; {N}
and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. {P}
(Personally, I like the books that don't omit the first line "a Psalm of David" and the like. They are important too. There are ten different types of these beginnings and each on possess something that the others don't have.  A Psalm doctor -I'm making up the name- i.e. a religious person can maybe gather these 'word herbs' and make a remedy.  The famous one is Tikkun haklaki: Psalms
The Sparks
Almost every good thing is encased in a surrounding bad. Like the orange analogy. Or, if you will, picture a mountain top surrounded by clouds. The mountain is the good and the surrounding clouds is the evil that feeds off of it.
More examples of this is when someone has confidence in themselves. The surrounding evil would be pride, arrogance, boastfulness.
When someone is very intelligent, the surrounding evil would be chutzpah, boldness, arrogance.
and so on and so forth.
And so the game is to surgically (lol) reach for the good and stay away from the bad.  That reminds me of one of the 39 works we are not allowed to do on Shabbat: bore /separating (בורר.) Well, we can take the good from the bad, but not the bad from a pile. On Shabbat we only want the good.   But anyway, as a kabbalist once said to my husband, who in turn told me; In this particular work of separating, the actual act of separating is na'ar () which is the gematria of 320. Once the good has been separated its 1 less the 320, which leaves us with 319.
300 =(sh) = ש
+10= (i) =  '
+ 9=  (t) =ט
=???!!! %$&*#
May we all merit the wisdom to distinguish and discriminate between the good, meaty part of an 'orange' (i.e. the confidence, the faith, the intelligence, the inner light) vs the 'peel' (i.e pride, gullibility, chutzpah, raw physical)!
Flashback Post: The Din Meister
Are you a Din Meister?
Meister = Master. For example a master of all trades.
Din = judgement
A Din Meister (I invented that phrase) is someone whom judgement follows around. Someone always has something negative to say to or about the Din Meister. If there's no one, then s/he say it to himself. Examples of Din Meister behavior:
* Din Meister walks with her kids outside. As soon as Din Meister notices that someone has taken notice of her, or soon after someone greets her, she becomes very self conscious and critical of her kids -yelling at them for slouching, harshly straightening out their clothes, etc.
* Self flagellation
* When something not positive happens to Din Meister, she thinks "it figures" (i.e. "yes, that is the way its suppose to be, the way it's expected..")
* When things are going great, Din Meister waits for the turn of the tides. She thinks its inevitable. And JUST!
* People tend to find things to criticize Din Meister about. Constantly.
* When Din Meister does something any ordinary person would do, its viewed as wrong, bad, evil, out of place, etc.
Well now, how to remove this din, this constant judgement, from DM's life?
Here are some ways I heard about:
A) Tell others of your pain that they may pray for you
B) Charity (monetary or physically helping people)
C) Crying out to God
D) Changing one's name (Abram to Abraham; Sarai to Sarah; Joshua to Yehoshua, etc)
E) Improving one's conduct
F) Rebuke a friend for/with the right motive (Assuming the friend actually needs rebuking)
G) Not succumbing to dispair or depression
H) Repentance
I) Not making the suffering public knowledge (just a close friend or two to pray for you)
J) Visiting a Tzaddik (a holy person)
K) Psalms
L) Humbling one's self
M) Fasting
N) Accepting embarrassment
O) reciting Song of Songs
P) Being merciful to others
I'll say something else. At times I have felt like a Din Meister. But I chase the din away with laughter or lightheartedness. If I see someone looking and I'm feeling self conscious, I joke with my kids and we both laugh. Or if I'm alone, I think a pleasant thought or say some good (or thrilling) news. That usually puts me in a better disposition. Usually the person talking to me critically or looking disapprovingly ends up smiling as well. Joy has an amazing healing and rectifying power that I don't think the western world has tapped into yet.
One interesting sign of of peace and calm is when there are not many businesses going on. Think a nice quiet town in a shanty town or something.  Everyone is of one will. Businesses have to convince people that they are lacking. With so many businesses out there--all needing to have a good profit in order to thrive and grow-- they need to have a wide consumer base. Its an unfortunate need to convince folks that they are lacking something. I think  folks should be aware of this, otherwise, they will always feel lacking and not know why; or walk around with a feeling of incompleteness. At any rate, less "stuff" makes for more breeze-y room which will hopefully lead to clarity and relaxation and calm.
There is another way...
The holiness of dancing:
When someone hears wonderful news, they jump for joy! When they get good tidings, they do a dance and a skip! There is a holiness in dancing. Somehow people know about this subconsciously but I don't hear or read about it anywhere. Well, according to the Likutey Moharan (Lesson 41), dancing -moving the left leg and the right leg- towards good, for a holy reason, for good news, for good, holy thoughts, etc. this also dashes evil decrees in heaven, chases away din /judgement.
Dancing to lewd music, jumping and moving because someone got hurt, or some such reason is akin to the story of Nadav and Avihu. They wanted to bring a fire offering to God, but it was not done in the appropriate fashion. As a result, they were swallowed up by the fire.
In summary, at times din surrounds a person. Things go wrong, even the person himself or herself feels entitled to the wrongs occurring. But there is compassion in the world.  There are ways to chase that air away. Mainly reconnecting to God, charity, reading Psalms (out loud), and dancing. Basically, anything that takes you out of your usual way, or helps you to rise above your "horoscope."
Flashback Post: Lighting Your Precious Candles
Since its so close to Chanukah, I thought this post was appropo...
Well, what do you use to light up your seven precious candles?
According to Rebbe Nachman, in Likutey Moharan lesson #21 we all have seven precious candles. These candles are our eyes, our ears, two nostrils and our mouth. When we use pure, clean oil to illuminate these candles that means we are checking what we take in --good books, good blog posts, positive, useful information, good tidings, important tidings, good food, fragrant or cool air, etc. When it is said that unclean, dirty oil is used, its as if we are putting shmutzy, trashy, junky, gossipy, disgraceful movies, songs, pictures, bad smells into ourselves.
It can be worthwhile to use good, healthy oil for illuminating these candles because a well lit face brings us to grace from The Holy One, Blessed be He and also the intellect can more easily absorbs information (the channels are not clogged up by falsehood, hurtful info, and the like).
Now who wouldn't want that?
It goes further. There are two kinds of knowledge. The one that is inside the brain already and the one that hoovers around us waiting to be let in. Let's give these two names. The one that's inside us already, we'll call absorbed knowledge; the kind that is not yet processed yet, we'll call floating knowledge (in Hebrew its called makif. Should I use the Hebrew?)
Using my favorite mascot, Karen. Say Karen is waiting to absorb some floating knowledge. For the time being she's just not getting it.
The floating knowledge x, y, and z are buzzing around her. She can't really see it, but its there. Some of it is so pure, so refined that unless Karen refines her seven candles, she may not be able to absorb all of it.
This floating knowledge of x, y, and z can also be called her "garments" because they hoover around her like a coat.
There was once a thug who was waiting for a girl to pass by to hurt her. He hid behind a bush and prepared for his ambush.  Luckily, that girl decided to wear a disguise. She wore something different than what she already had. Thus, when she passed by the thug behind the bush, she was unrecognizable and was able to pass unharmed!
Another good reason for illuminating our candles and absorbing new knowledge is that we eliminate the old "garment" around us and have a brand new garment unrecognizable than before. Thus, we can experience life quite differently than before.  The "thugs" won't recognize the new garment and we pass unharmed; that is to say, old naysayers and previous hurtful words and haters can not effect us because they are chasing after the wrong garments.
(hmmm, perhaps that explains why kids are always putting things in their mouths! lol. Forever learning, absorbing from the outside and bringing it in)
The concept of "garment" is too deep and I don't think I would do it justice to explain any further.
So to sum it all up: using pure oil to make your candles shine bright -i.e. using proper speech, no cuss words, not breathing hot air of anger, keeping cool, seeing good and hearing good- is beneficial in that it allows you to absorb knowledge faster. As you keep absorbing new knowledge and more knowledge, you get wise. You receive grace and you leave your enemies powerless.
Main Stream Media Shrapnel & Declogging
Every once in a while, just like a victim of terrorist bombs (but no where near the same degree), I also have little pieces of shrapnel that surface and I have to deal with.
terrorist bombers put nails or glass or whatevers around their bombs so that when they explode, they get the extra carnage that they lust for -or their leaders lust for. That, combined with things that get blown up around -it leaves so much shrapnel inside a person, that the doctors can only take out the big pieces and leave the survivor to deal with the smaller, really embedded pieces as they slowly surface back up to the skin--its a long process.
I don't want to diminish what they are going through, but on a smaller scale, I feel as I've I had a blast of media poison when I was younger and slowly slowly shrapnel comes to the surface.  Depending on my maturity, my development, I then deal with it.
So today's shrapnel is:
Seeing Indians from India, Sudanese, Nigerians, etc., as humans!!  (on a different plane than before).
I think the American media trains people to view people from the Asian continent and the African continent as just a bunch. A lump. A pile. A mass. So when I hear that people were killed by the hundreds, its like hearing there is a storm in a far away city in America; you hope all is well and that everyone braces themselves and don't think much after that.
But after hundreds being killed -people aren't "well".  And bracing ones self is not enough. Many, many families are hurt and crying for their babies, their sons, daughters, fathers, mothers. friends. Whole communities are effected and discouraged.
The big stories when I was young was Indian train crashes.  There was always some horrific train crash with hundreds of casualties.  I think they even listed how much cattle was lost as well. That, to me was odd, as if there were fishes, humans, and cattle. All without speech! All from the animal world.
Truly, I even started to imagine Africans and Asians as people with tunnel vision -which is how  I imagined animals then- creatures, albeit nice creatures- who only see directly in front of them and don't have peripheral vision.
Well, thank God all that had changed. It was a slow process beginning with me stepping away from an abusive, closed home and stepping into a world where I dated Nigerians -that made them somewhat real. I wasn't fully healed from the abuse and so even dating was not a healthy affair.
Getting to know a whole other culture also helped. After I moved away from home, I got...CABLE!! woohoo! lol. That really opened me up to different worlds. I really enjoyed the Islam channel and the Hindu channel. My favorite was the Hindu channel with all the bollywood music videos and their sitcoms. It really helped me to understand that they are regular people, they have feelings.  But still I couldn't understand it when hundreds get reported dead from a disaster or from a murderer in the news in such a stoic way. As if, the appropriate emotion is no emotion.
This past Shabbat, I was telling my children about the different names of God.  It was tricky because, in Judaism, one does not say these names unless one is actually trying to invoke God. So it would go something like this:
"And there's Shakai. If you change the K into a D, you get another name of God..that name is about limits, too much, too little...." As I spoke, the kids mentally replaced the k with a d and shouted out the "answer"!
To show them that it was a scary thing (without scarimg them) I would duck my face into a blanket as if scared.  The kids had a good laugh about it, but then they would say all the names just to see me duck under the blanket! Finally it go too much, I said, "Enough!" ("dai!") and started behaving in a stoic manner, so that they will follow suit (and stop playing around and saying God's Holy Names so callously). It worked. They calmed down and we continued the lesson.
But I wonder if the  MSM reporters do the same thing. Might they report things in a stoic manner to invoke stoic responses to these horrific tragedies? Well, whatever the motive, I had learned the lesson.
Then I entered the Jewish world. In that world, they had their own media so I heard Jewish news about Jewish people --quite different from how MSM portrayed them.  Even in the African American world, the news by Blacks themselves were quite critical of themselves. It was still hard to arouse sympathy, connection...compassion. (nowadays, its alot better!). But in the Jewish world, when one soldier was kidnapped, it was a tragedy- a precious soul into the hands of angry, hateful people who have no problems torturing for the sake of torturing.
Whole communities would gather together to pray for rain. Schoolchildren took time away from their studies to gather in the auditorium and pray for a communal need.
People cared for each other. I learned. And thank God, this heart of flesh expanded into having compassion for the rest of the world.  To hear callously that hundreds of Sudanese Christians were burned (burned alive!!) hurts me more than I could ever describe to someone who is still numbed from MSM pioson of stoicism.
Now, the following may sound arrogant to the ears of non-Jews, but there is this belief by some that Israel is a microcosm of the world. That every Jew represents a part of the world. Which explains why, whenever something bad happens, it could be the furthest thing from Jewish life, the world likes to blame the Jews for it. This seems to be a belief that some Jews carry as a burden, and the world (unwittingly?) carries with venom! They'll publicly say that Jews are nothing, but have conspiracy theories that Jews are just about to take over whole planets, they have all the money, all the gold, all silver, everything theirs. They basically give them this authority.  But if, IF this is so, then what part of the world do I represent?
A friend of mine went to a Chinese medicine doctor. The doctor said there was a part of her that is underdeveloped.  I was surprised to hear that! Can Chinese Medicine help in that regard? Truly in that realm that is where I heard the most -the closest- explanation of sexual molestation's spiritual effects. Feel free to check it "Chinese Medicine and Sexual Abuse".  While I don't believe everything she wrote (he?) there, its food for thought.
I also suspect there is a part of me that has not matured enough.  Its the output part of me. The way I respond in public settings.  I am working on that. I think ever since I started wondering about, and doing research on dancing, and actually dancing,  I've been towards that path. But I'm nowhere near where I need to be.  I want to be able to dance more freely, to say what's on my mind in a tactful way without fear of offending (especially if I said it in a most tactful way!) in appropriate settings. I want to get that part of me out from under the boots of fear of man.
Once that happens, only then can I truly explore what can I do for the world? What good can I dance down?  How can I elevate those I care for and love? Too much time is wasted already. Frivolous phone calls -Waste.  Being down and sad about something -Waste. Mulling over guilt -Waste! Enough Wastes already.
It could be that the world simply can't care about Sudan, and the many other nations in dire need of help.  Perhaps everyone fell under the influence of Esau's way of thinking: pretend to be good, hunt men, and dwell on the mountain of she'ar (which is similar to the word "hair" in Hebrew).
